In recognition of
Welcome and thank
you for being here. And, thank you for being a volunteer at our
Library. As a volunteer, definitely, YOU MAKE OUR WORLD A BRIGHTER
As stated by Winston
Churchill, “ You make a living by what you get, but you make a life
by what you give.”
volunteers in 2016, you gave 13,563 hours. At the current rate, your
volunteer hours are worth $25.56 per hour. Our volunteer service in
2016 was worth $319, 545! That is money saved by the County because
they did not have to pay anyone to do the work that you provided.
And, if you think about it, we are volunteer workers that are
experienced and very well skilled. Probably even earning much more
than that per hour in our previous careers.
Many of us have held
jobs as teachers, nurses, policemen, office managers, skilled
laborers, caregivers and much, much more. We’ve earned our high
school, college and advanced degrees while also being parents,
raising a family and running a household.
And, then, we
retire! To relax, travel, enjoy our families now that we can,
knowing that we have done our best in raising them. Retire? NOT!
We are a giving
generation and society. So, needing to keep busy and keep giving, we
volunteer. Whether it is for 25 hours per year or 685 hours per
year, we give. We contribute.
It is a benefit to
us as well as to our society and community. In Florida, almost 20%
of residents volunteer, offering 459.7 million hours of service. We
volunteer in a variety of categories: religious, social and
community, and education being the top three (3).
In case you are
interested, the word volunteerism is a noun, meaning the use or
involvement of volunteer labor, especially for community service. In
my mind, although we might fall under that description of the noun,
in reality, we are the VERB! We volunteer! We actually do the work!
Thank you for all
you do, every day, all the time. Verbally, let me express,
you are the BEST! When I see you at the Library, you make my day
brighter! Thank you! Thank you!
Sincerely and with
Jones - President Friends of the Library
